Bookless Libraries & Restricted Internet

"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."
Ray Bradbury

By now you've likely heard of Federal law attempts from cable and phone companies' likely desires to be allowed to charge tier level payment plans for internet usage similar to cable tv tier plans. O the uproar that would be! Maybe another good reason for people to be active in political and voting education?
Before I digress, I want to say I think people should hold on to their books and read the hard copies. I still buy and read them. Internet is about to get expensive and then many will be without it or maybe it'll become a tax payer entitlement for the poor.
Bookless libraries? I'd rather die. Give me library or give me death. I love the musty smell of old books. Isn't there a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to bare books? And what's the matter with Texas?

Texas library offers glimpse of bookless future

A woman points at a computer screen at BiblioTech, a first of its kind digital public library in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Texas has seen the future of the public library, and it looks a lot like an Apple Store: Rows of glossy iMacs beckon. iPads mounted on a tangerine-colored bar invite readers. And hundreds of other tablets stand ready for checkout to anyone with a borrowing card.

Even the librarians imitate Apple's dress code, wearing matching shirts and that standard-bearer of geek-chic, the hoodie. But this $2.3 million library might be most notable for what it does not have — any actual books.

That makes Bexar County's BiblioTech the nation's only bookless public library, a distinction that has attracted scores of digital bookworms, plus emissaries from as far away as Hong Kong who want to learn about the idea and possibly take it home.

"I told our people that you need to take a look at this. This is the future," said Mary Graham, vice president of South Carolina's Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. "If you're going to be building new library facilities, this is what you need to be doing."

All-digital libraries have been on college campuses for years. But the county, which runs no other libraries, made history when it decided to open BiblioTech. It is the first bookless public library system in the country, according to information gathered by the American Library Association.

Similar proposals in other communities have been met with doubts. In California, the city of Newport Beach floated the concept of a bookless branch in 2011 until a backlash put stacks back in the plan. Nearly a decade earlier in Arizona, the Tucson-Pima library system opened an all-digital branch, but residents who said they wanted books ultimately got their way.

Graham toured BiblioTech in the fall and is pushing Charleston leaders for a bond measure in 2014 to fund a similar concept, right down to the same hip aesthetic reminiscent of Apple.

Except Apple Stores aren't usually found in parts of town like this. BiblioTech is on the city's economically depressed South Side and shares an old strip mall with a Bexar County government building. On a recent afternoon, one confused couple walked into the library looking for the justice of the peace.

San Antonio is the nation's seventh-largest city but ranks 60th in literacy, according to census figures. Back in the early 2000s, community leaders in Bibliotech's neighborhood of low-income apartments and thrift stores railed about not even having a nearby bookstore, said Laura Cole, BiblioTech's project coordinator. A decade later, Cole said, most families in the area still don't have Wi-Fi.

"How do you advance literacy with so few resources available?" she said.

Residents are taking advantage now. The library is on pace to surpass 100,000 visitors in its first year. Finding an open iMac among the four dozen at BiblioTech is often difficult after the nearby high school lets out, and about half of the facility's e-readers are checked out at any given time, each loaded with up to five books. One of BiblioTech's regulars is a man teaching himself Mandarin.

Head librarian Ashley Elkholf came from a traditional Wisconsin high school library and recalled the scourges of her old job: misshelved items hopelessly lost in the stacks, pages thoughtlessly ripped out of books and items that went unreturned by patrons who were unfazed by measly fines and lax enforcement.

But in the nearly four months since BiblioTech opened, Elkholf has yet to lend out one of her pricey tablets and never see it again. The space is also more economical than traditional libraries despite the technology: BiblioTech purchases its 10,000-title digital collection for the same price as physical copies, but the county saved millions on architecture because the building's design didn't need to accommodate printed books.

"If you have bookshelves, you have to structure the building so it can hold all of that weight," Elkholf said. "Books are heavy, if you've ever had one fall on your foot."

Eric Gay, AP
Patrons use computers at BiblioTech, a first of its kind digital public library in San Antonio.

Up the road in Austin, for example, the city is building a downtown library to open in 2016 at a cost of $120 million. Even a smaller traditional public library that recently opened in nearby suburban Kyle cost that city about $1 million more than BiblioTech.

On her first visit, 19-year-old Abigail Reyes was only looking for a quiet space to study for an algebra exam. But she got a quick tutorial from a librarian on how to search for digital books and check out tablets before plopping down on a row of sleek couches.

"I kind of miss the books," Reyes said. "I don't like being on the tablets and stuff like that. It hurts my eyes."

Across the room, Rosemary Caballeo tried shopping for health insurance on a set of computers reserved for enrollment in the Affordable Care Act. Her restless 2-year-old ran around and pawed at a row of keyboards. The little girl shrieked loudly, shattering the main room's quiet. She was soon whisked outside by her father.

After all, it's still a library.

First Responders, Disaster, Digging and Praying

As a BGRRT chaplain I also assisted Samaritans purse whenever possible because i believe that is where it all starts, but loved taking people's rakes and shovels from people to give the victims a break while i share the Gospel with them.  My first experience with disaster resonse was in the San Diego 2003 fires, after Samaritans Purse drove all the way from North Carolina to help. I became certified afterwards. And then responded after the hurricanes shortly after.
My first official response as a Billy Graham Rapid Response chaplain was in 2003 Ft. Meyers, Florida after the five hurricanes. Then in 2005 was hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I chose to go to Groves, TX and Shreveport, LA.     But went to New Orleans the next year.  I can't pick a favorite story except one man in the St. Bernard Parish in New Orleans in 2006 came to our food/supplies location and hadn't smiled since before Katrina. His wife died of cancer a month before hurricane and they lost everything. We prayed for him and he was filled with joy and salvation. He looked like death worn over before but he changed immediately and could not stop smiling. He was unrecognizable from just minutes before. I forgot who took this photo, but sure glad they did. Because it's one of the most memorable parts of all the times I've responded to disasters. From left is me, the man we prayed with and a young volunteer who prayed with us. He is the one who began talking to the man and i just remember when he came under the canopy thinking, God, please help this man he looks like he's ready to quit.

Also, in 2005 Groves, Tx after Katrina and Rita, as a BGRRT Chaplain,I visited a business on the KMart corner where us cchaplains and Samaritans Purse were sheltered. The owner was a very short man, physically deformed and could could not operate a pen or pencil, and could barely walk well. His home needed trees and debris romoval and tarps. And when i asked him if he cansign the Samafitans Purse ppermission paper, he took his shoe and sock off his right footand signed the pap. Needlass to say, i said a prayer with him and his cco-workers and he rededicated his life to Jesus. He said he was Baptist when i had asked him if hehas Jesus in his heaft. O how many times ive said the same thing before.

Communism, Islam, The Vatican & Obama

In order to address the relation of Islam to the title of my blog, you must see my previous blog,
"What do the Vatican and Jesuits Have To Do With Hitler, Islam and Jerusalem?"
http://michaeldtobin.blogspot.com/2013/03/pope-francisobama-israeli-trip.html?m=1
Then you will see the real reason the U.S. Embassy was removed from the Vatican. But let this article below serve as an accurate, immediate reference to how Communism and Socialism is being enforced in such a brutally illegal way against religion and people's beliefs, and targeting whole societies against one another to further its' goals.

Marx and Marshall Would Be Proud Of Obama's Attack On Religion
Dec. 13, 2013
The Cult of Communism and its gateway drug, socialism, centers around mythical utopian notions of how material goods and power is “equally” distributed in a society. One of its core beliefs is that religion - in the words of the group's founder, Karl Marx - is "the opiate of the masses." (Coming from a thrice-bankrupt man, he probably wished he had taken a few more opiates) Such is Communism's mesmerizing effect, that an African-American philosopher named Frank Davis Marshall decided in 1931 to adopt the school of communist thought. Mr. Marshall went on to be President Barack Obama's mentor in Hawaii throughout his teenage years.

Making fun of, ridiculing and attacking religion are some of the tactics used by men trying to gain power over those who put God first in their lives. CS Lewis said it well “Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.” People who trust, love and fear God undermine some human’s grandiose worldly appetites for power. The lack of fear and control over citizens who have faith and hope in God irritates these Washington power mongers. Recently, Pastor Rick Warren in an appearance on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Live,” said that “he fears the disapproval of God More than I fear your (Piers Morgan’) disapproval” , how dare Pastor Warren buck the popular group think of the day on gay marriage. What this liberal media underlying spin implies is how uncool and stupid Pastor Warren is and yes, his religious beliefs are what is really under attack. This raw power grab from Washington that is supported by the liberal media, is intended to belittle faith in God and religion and is now being openly promoted from the White House under Barack Obama.

Marx's type of thinking - while deranged, misguided and occasionally inadvertently comical (especially when he writes about interest rates) - at its core is focused on power accumulation and elimination of anything that threatens or takes away from that design. That's why Josef Stalin made the observation that he had 50 tank divisions and the Pope had none. And why President Obama celebrates the destruction of the Senatorial filibuster, a noble democratic tradition that helps resist the consolidation of power.

The ugly desire of the Communist Cult to relentlessly attack God and religion seems like an incurable, lethal human disease. President Obama and his administration's attack against religious liberty has shown that they are infected with the greed for power, the communist disease, that like a child, wants to be king of the hill and will knock down any threat to that position.

The Administration's most recent display of its anti-religious agenda has been its spiteful decision to close the U.S. Embassy at the Vatican. Not only is it a closure but it’s a reversal of President Ronald Reagan's order, who established America's Embassy there in 1984. It is an obviously retaliation against America's Catholic leadership for rebelling and speaking critically about the harsh anti-religious provisions of Obamacare.

Indeed, Cardinal Dolan has warned about Obamacare’s disastrous anti-religion mandates in the Wall Street Journal, by saying:

"Hundreds of religious institutions, and hundreds of thousands of individual citizens, have raised their voices in principled opposition to this requirement that religious institutions and individuals violate their own basic moral teaching in their health plans. Certainly many of these good people and groups were Catholic, but many were Americans of other faiths, or no faith at all, who recognize that their beliefs could be next on the block."

And my friend and bishop, Cardinal DiNardo from Texas has warned Americans about Obamacare saying:

"Under the ‘preventive services’ mandate of the Affordable Care Act, Catholic employers and most Catholic institutions offering health coverage to their employees, will be forced to cover all these objectionable items."

Of course, the propagandists in the liberal (a politically correct way of saying communist these days) media, have spewed forth criticism declaring that this Embassy closure is not important, and that it’s nothing to get worked up about. They say it’s not even an Embassy closure because the Embassy has simply "relocated" to the U.S. Embassy of Italy. It will still have a "separate entrance", the media cunningly tells Americans. But, I ask simple question: If you move the Embassy out of the Vatican and to another country (Italy), has not the Embassy in the Vatican been closed?

According to these manipulative propagandists, the answer to that question is "No". Well, the embassy is not there anymore, and by any definition that means it is closed. Under this “liberal” logic (I use the word logic loosely) we could close the embassy in Afghanistan and move it to Pakistan and as long as we give it a separate entrance it should suffice. What is particularly revealing about this line of attack is that it spotlights the extent to which liberals will twist facts, lie and obfuscate to cover up their anti-religious stance. Because that is what this Embassy closure was: A punishment and display of anti-religion maneuvers coming from the American government itself. The White House can spin it anyway it wants, but Karl Marx would have been clapping and cheering loudly (breaking for a short time from his lifelong depression) if he could have heard this news!

And this retaliatory attack against America's Catholic Church cannot be overlooked. There are almost 80 million Catholics in America, 1 in every 4 Americans is Catholic - and this is a super-majority Christian nation (although most Catholics and 80 percent of evangelicals don’t vote). America has embassies in known terrorist strongholds and yet we are closing an embassy that promotes peace and that has ties to one quarter of all Americans. What?

The blatant arrogance of the federal government to attack Catholic Americans citizens demonstrates how dangerous the power consolidation has become. This arrogance propagates from the White House that is captivated to the mysticism of Marxism. The White House has a desire to continue to consolidate its power. They have done this by attacking Catholics who dared to stand up against Obama and his comrades.

We definitely know Frank Davis Marshall would be proud of his young protégé!

It seems communism and its anti-religious teaching is alive, well and gaining ground. However, Americans should remember it sprung from a troubled, struggling and bloody 19th century, a theory based on wildly distorted views of the world. It economically has failed everywhere and this theory when put to practice has been responsible for more than 60 million deaths. Eventually, I hope it will be known only in history books as a mistake to learn from. A clear lesson for the future of a system that didn’t work. Most Americans thought that the end of the Soviet Union would have ended this type of demented thinking. It defies wisdom and logic seeing anti-religious propaganda expanding once again, with little opposition. It’s downright scary that an anti-religious agenda has spread and is being promoted from the highest office of the United States. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the anti-religious agenda is fundamentally nothing more than greed for more power and material wealth. It is a philosophy that left its creator, Marx, morally, spiritually and financially bankrupt! Frank Davis Marshall, must have forgotten to share that with his pupil, young Obama, or maybe Obama missed communist class that day.

President Obama and other power grabbing politicians (either side of the aisle) need to hear from the almost 80 million Catholics and all Christian citizens, that we see what he has done and their continued attack on us, all Christians and on all religions. America must immediately re-open the Vatican U.S. Embassy and resist the incessant attacks - and regulations - against religion in America. American Catholics must stop being the silent victims of this tyrannical power grab, wear out their knees in prayer and rise up in overwhelming numbers to remove these enemies of religious freedom in the upcoming elections.

The Gospel in your Hand
Posted on October 18, 2013
http://gregburdine.com/2013/10/18/the-gospel-in-your-hand/
One of the main reasons believers don’t share their faith is that they feel ill-prepared.  Through Evangelism Explosion, I have discovered a a simple memory tool you can use to share a Gospel presentation – your hand!  Each finger represents a key point of the Gospel.

Using the five fingers on your hand, each finger represents a key point of the Gospel. It’s easy to learn, hard to forget, and you always have it with you. It’s a “hands-on” approach to sharing your faith.

Let me explain:

THUMB—HEAVEN IS A FREE GIFT

Your thumb symbolizes hitching a free ride to heaven, we cannot get there on our own. Use your thumb to make a thumbs up, such as someone who is hitchhiking would do. This is an easy way to remember you need to get a ride to heaven, you cannot get there on your own.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 6:23

INDEX FINGER—MAN IS A SINNER AND CANNOT SAVE HIMSELF

Your index finger is the first finger and symbolizes that man usually puts himself first. Using your index finger, or “first finger” is a good way to remember that we tend to put ourselves first. That is because we have a selfish and sinful nature. This symbolizes the second point of the gospel.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, -Romans 3:23

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.  -Ephesians 2:8-9

MIDDLE FINGER—GOD LOVES YOU, BUT HATES YOUR SIN

Your middle finger is the tallest finger. This is a good representation of God, since He is the creator and beginning of all things. We add the middle finger as we share about the nature of God.

God is love. -1 John 4:8b

Yet he [God] does not leave the guilty unpunished; -Exodus 34:7b

RING FINGER—JESUS IS THE INFINITE GOD-MAN

Your next finger to add to the presentation is the ring finger. This finger represents the marriage of Christ to the church. If you use your right hand as you talk about this, it will be on the right side of the great finger. You can then say that Christ sits at the right hand of the Father. It is very important to share who Jesus Christ is. Jesus Christ is the infinite God-man who died on the cross to pay for our sins and purchase a place in heaven for us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God … The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. -John 1:1,14

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, ... -1 Peter 2:24

LITTLE FINGER—THIS GIFT IS RECEIVED BY FAITH

Your little finger is the smallest finger and symbolizes faith. The gift of eternal life is received by faith.

… “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” -Acts 16:31

This simply explains the Gospel story.  Once you have shared your faith, it is important to offer the invitation to trust Christ as Savior.  I try to encourage the person I am talking with to pray.

There is no certain prayer that must be used to help someone to receive Christ. If you are not sure what you should pray, below is a simple prayer you might use.

Dear Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I believe you died on the cross to pay for my sin and purchase a place for me in heaven. I receive that gift right now by faith. Lord Jesus come into my heart and be my Lord and my Savior. Amen.

I have found that sharing your faith is rather simple, but it is never easy.  Sharing your faith is a bold move into the darkness of sin.  Satan will fight it.  I’ve found it ironic that we can talk about sports, politics, and health issues with no reluctance. But when it comes to eternal issues, we often relegate this discussion to the ‘professionals.’  I plead with you to share your faith with those you know who need Jesus. He will help you!

Do you have a ‘gospel presentation’ that you have used effectively?

Who are you praying for right now that needs to hear the Gospel story?

Malaysian Gov. Raids Bible Society Then Apologize, Kind of

Below is a Jakarta Post article, followed by another websites comments from outraged citizens, in a nation of so called freedom of worship. All of the comments ring true of our own country, by-the way.

Raid on Bible society regrettable:
M'sian unity council
 http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2014/01/07/raid-bible-society-regrettable-msian-unity-council.html

The newley-formed National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) says the recent raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia in Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya, was a “blatant disregard” for the agreed solution to the distribution of Christian publications in Bahasa Malaysia.

“NUCC regrets the raid and confiscation of the Bibles (by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department or Jais),” council chairman Samsuddin Osman said Monday.

“It is a blatant disregard for the 10-point solution made by the federal government in April 2011 and reiterated by the prime minister in October 2013.”

“We call on the government to ensure compliance with the solution and respond to the challenges to national unity with a greater sense of urgency,” he said after the NUCC inaugural meeting here.

The council also urged all parties to abide by the solution, which had been accepted by the Christian Federation of Malaysia.

Responding to a question, Samsuddin said the meeting had not touched on the issue of non-Muslims using the word “Allah”.

“We are not touching the ‘kalimah Allah’ issue (usage of the word Allah in non-Muslim scriptures). That is for the religious people to work out. We are talking about raids on places of worship.

Samsuddin, who is former chief secretary to the government, said that Malaysians must respect all places of worship and not hold demonstrations outside any of them.

However, the council refrained from saying that the Jais raid was “wrong”, arguing that NUCC could not take sides.

“Like a father, NUCC cannot blame our children, but can say this is cannot happen again,” he said.

Last Thursday, Jais enforcement officers seized 350 copies of Christian publications from the premises of the Bible Society of Malaysia.

It is understood that the raid was carried out under the Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988 that prohibits the use of the word “Allah” and other Quranic terms by non-Muslims.

Earlier, Samsudin said that NUCC had been tasked by the government to come up with a national bluerprint on unity within two years.

He said NUCC will hold nationwide townhall talks and roundtable discussions with non-governmental organisations and interest groups starting on February 22 in Kuala Lumpur.

NUCC working committees would also hold closed door meetings with the religious authorities and community leaders on issues affecting national unity and submit their first report to the Government in June.

Jais will be among the participants, Samsuddin said, adding: “NUCC will serve as unity bridge builders in Malaysian society.”

NUCC is either a tiger or cat, it can't be both

YOURSAY ‘Have the guts to say what is right; otherwise it’s lip-service.’

NUCC 'regrets' Jais raid, but won't say it's wrong

Mushiro: People holding positions in public office should speak out clearly and strongly on public interest issues. On serious matters such as the raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia and the seizure of the Malay bibles, the wrong side should be told off.

And if the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) is too careful with its words, then how can the message be put across?

Anonymous_4031: It is regrettable and pathetic for NUCC to say that it regrets Jais' (Selangor Islamic Religious Department) raid and seizure of Malay bibles. Have the guts to say what is right, otherwise it’s only lip-service.

NUCC is a toothless tiger. Has it forgotten that certain people entered the Christian premises in Petaling Jaya some years ago and disrupted a Christian function? Please do not overuse the word "recur". The recent intrusion is the second time.

You need not take sides; but you must be truthful and say what is to be said and act accordingly. "A mere brave speech without action is letting off hot steam," so said Mahatma Gandhi.

Where is the implementation of the 10-point agreement, endorsed by the cabinet before the Sarawak state election? Be honest and stick your neck out on the agreement. Was the 10-point agreement a political tool to use just before the state election?

Election or no election, stick to your guns, and never politicise religion for political expediency.

Anonymous_4196: I wonder which of the 10 points in the solution promised by Premier Najib Abdul Razak has been fulfilled so far.

1Melayu: I am not sure why everyone is harping on this so-called ‘10-point solution’. Like many other things, it was a myth created by Najib before GE13 to win votes and nothing else. So stop talking about this fable.

Limfly: When something is as clear cut as an illegal raid conducted by one religious body against another religious body, the NUCC has every right to take the side of the one whose rights have been violated - the side of justice.

When a wrong has been done, just say it and bring the perpetrators to book. Stop pussyfooting around.

MAYVBWELL: “NUCC also urged the government to urgently respond to issues pertaining to national unity.” Perhaps this advice is equally applicable to NUCC.

Okeylah: To NUCC: Since you can't say Jais is wrong even though you do feel their actions are regrettable, you should probably say they are "not right" just to avoid using the word "wrong".

Mob1900: National Unity Consultative Council, what part of 'national' and 'unity' is the council referring to?

Anonymous_4056: NUCC can't do much. It’s another toothless (useless) and powerless group meant as window dressing.

Your duty is to state clearly without ambiguity whether Jais is right or wrong to barge into the Bible Society of Malaysia and seize the Malay bibles and arrest its officers.

Surely Jais is abusing its authority in calling the police (another brainless sub-division of Umno) for help. Jais should not, and should never be empowered/allowed to meddle/interfere in the affairs of minorities’ religions.

Albertan98: When clear leadership is needed, we find wishy-washy statements from the body set up to look into national unity. That is the problem with Malaysia at this moment.

Nobody from the BN side, except perhaps Marina Mahathir, seems to be able to stand up to the tide of government tolerated racism and religious bigotry.

Odin Tajue: You are absolutely right, NUCC chairperson Samsudin Osman. You can't take sides.

As we all know, the best position anyone without any conscience, principles, integrity and courage can take is to sit on the fence. I believe the term used to describe such people is ‘fence-sitters’.

Paul Warren: Like as if Jais and those pushing the buttons care about what these jokers think!

Basically: To say “The council can take a stand but the person with the power to do something is the PM,” is to say the NUCC is a total waste of our time and money.

If the PM were doing his job as a proper PM for all Malaysians, according to the constitution, you wouldn’t need to form this silly council at all in the first place.

Banzai: NUCC, you are given the power and authority to determine on issues of national unity. So you must make a stand on issues that affect national unity and not throw the ball to someone else’s court.

If not, what good are you. If you are given a gun without any bullets, what’s the use of having a gun. I am really disappointed with NUCC.

Vijay47: “NUCC welcomes the decision of Selangor Umno not to stage any demonstration outside churches,” the chairman said.

So you are admiring Umno whose initial position had threatened to set the nation aflame. By deciding not to go ahead with their dangerous plans, they have become good guys?

NUCC and Lee Lam Thye, why don't you just close shop and go home? By the way, did you also express regret that Marina and friends went to Our Lady of Lourdes Church to bring some comfort to Christians?

Guyintheglass: Disappointing. At a minimum, it should take a position whether it is right to enter the Bible Society of Malaysia's premises without a warrant.

Surely one religious body entering another different religious body's premise is within the ambit of NUCC.

Peacemaker: NUCC has no guts to call a spade a spade. How can you consider yourself promoters and guardians of national unity. You either recognise unity or you don’t. You cannot straddle the fence to be everybody's nice but spineless guy.

Unafraid: Clearly the NUCC's mild statement is made in deference to the Selangor sultan's decree. In fact, I suspect the silence of the entire federal cabinet is because of the same reason, notwithstanding the inept top leadership of the government.

We have a government in total paralysis with everybody going through their law books, wondering whether federal law overrides state law or royalty overrides every law.

The nation is rudderless, directionless, and leaderless and, God forbid, potentially lawless.

Ten Commandments/Satan Statue in Oklahoma Capitol

“Destruction is all around us,” said a woman helped by Samaritan’s Purse. “Shops are closed. We stand in line for hours for a loaf of bread. We can’t afford fruits and vegetables. Our only hope is in the Lord, Jesus Christ. We need your prayers to keep us safe.” http://www.samaritanspurse.org/article/aid-for-syrian-refugees/?utm_source=SPFacebook&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=m_Y000-SOCM_SocialMedia

The quote above was fromFranklinGrahams latest update from the Samaritans Purse ministry, which I've had the opportunity to work with several times as I've mentioned in my profile on this blog.
Meanwhile, US atheists from New York plan a Satan statue in Oklahoma capitol . So my question is. Will the Gothic gargoils on early American rooftops get to come down lower also? While America rejects God, the Middle East is accepting Him. The only Him that gets an uppercase H.
It's no secret what the Bible reveals about the devil, and all of mankind in the past, present, and future. You won't find much more than brief concepts, half truths and opinions from today'suniversity and jr college religion and philosophy classes, and with high price tags, too. That's why I always say, read the Bible for yourself whle you are legally and intellectually able to.
Be all that as it is, here's a artists rendition of the proposed statue. Also, see the mainstream media version of the story below, and an update I inserted which is a video of Ray Comfort and his latest commentary on this, from his January 8, 2014 broadcast of, The Comfort Zone..

SEAN MURPHY, Associated Press
OKLAHOMA CITY - A satanic group unveiled designs Monday for a 7-foot-tall statue of Satan it wants to put at the Oklahoma state Capitol, where a Ten Commandments monument was placed in 2012.

The New York-based Satanic Temple formally submitted its application to a panel that oversees the Capitol grounds, including an artist's rendering that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard that's often used as a symbol of the occult. In the rendering, Satan is sitting in a pentagram-adorned throne with smiling children next to him.

"The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond," temple spokesman Lucien Greaves said in a statement. "The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."

The Satanic Temple maintains that the Oklahoma Legislature's decision to authorize a privately funded Ten Commandments monument at the Capitol opened the door for its statue. The Ten Commandments monument was placed on the north steps of the building in 2012, and the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has sued to have it removed.

Similar requests for monuments have been made by a Hindu leader in Nevada, an animal rights group and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

In response, the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission recently placed a moratorium on considering any new requests.

"Anybody can still make their request, but we'll hold off on considering them until the lawsuit is adjudicated," commission Chairman Trait Thompson said.

The push by the Satanic Temple has rankled elected leaders in this conservative state known as the buckle of the Bible Belt, who say such a proposal would never be approved by the commission.

"I think you've got to remember where you are. This is Oklahoma, the middle of the heartland," said Rep. Don Armes, R-Faxon. "I think we need to be tolerant of people who think different than us, but this is Oklahoma, and that's not going to fly here."

While Greaves acknowledges the Satanic Temple's effort is in part to highlight what it says is hypocrisy of state leaders in Oklahoma, he says the group is serious about having a monument placed there.

The group already has raised nearly half of the $20,000 it says it needs to build the monument.

"We plan on moving forward one way or another," Greaves said.

Another Oklahoma legislator, Rep. Earl Sears, called the group's effort "an insult to the good people of the state."

"I do not see Satanism as a religion, and they have no place at the state Capitol," said Sears, R-Bartlesville.

On its website, the Satanic Temple explains that it "seeks to separate Religion from Superstition by acknowledging religious belief as a metaphorical framework with which we construct a narrative context for our goals and works.

"Satan stands as the ultimate icon for the selfless revolt against tyranny, free & rational inquiry, and the responsible pursuit of happiness," the website says.

Hell and Great Lakes Freezing Over/SuperiorSet to Complete Freeze

***FEB. 11, 2014 UPDATE***
Ice Expert Predicts Lake Superior Will Completely Freeze Over This Wint

http://m.cnsnews.com/news/article/barbara-hollingsworth/ice-expert-predicts-lake-superior-will-completely-freeze-over

(CNSNews.com) – Lake Superior hasn’t completely frozen over in two decades.
But an expert on Great Lakes ice says there’s a “very high likelihood” that the three-quadrillion-gallon lake will soon be totally covered with ice thanks to this winter’s record-breaking cold.

The ice cover on the largest freshwater lake in the world hit a 20-year record of 91 percent on Feb. 5, 1994.

Jay Austin, associate professor at the Large Lakes Observatory in Duluth, Minn., told CNSNews.com that he expects that record will be broken this winter when the most northern of the Great Lakes becomes totally shrouded in ice.

The thickness of the ice on Lake Superior “varies tremendously,” from a very thin sheet in some areas near the coast to several feet thick in other spots, Austin says. The  National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that the mean thickness of the lake ice is 26 cm, or a little over 10 inches.

Austin attributes the large amount of ice on the lake to the “extraordinary cold winter we’ve had,” pointing out that Duluth recently experienced an all-time record of 23 straight days of below-zero temperatures.

The previous record of 22 days was set in 1936 and tied in 1963, according to the National Weather Service.

Austin, who studies the effect of lake ice, predicts that it will have a “very strong influence” on the regional climate this summer, with the “air conditioning [lake] effect” more pronounced than usual.

“Typically, the lake will start warming up in late June, but it will be August before we see that this year,” Austin told CNSNews.com.

As of February 10th, ice covered 80.4 percent of all the Great Lakes, compared to 38.4 percent last winter, according to NOAA. That’s considerably higher than the lake’s long-term average of 51.4 percent under ice.

The record for maximum ice coverage of 94.7 percent was set in 1979. The lowest ice accumulation occurred in 2002, when just 9.5 percent of the surface of the Great Lakes was frozen solid.

***UPDATE 1-21-14 60% of Great Lakes predicted by Jan/Feb this yr, up from last yrs 38% and yearly 50% average past three decades*** See this article for the latest update on ice lakes benefits and setbacks.

Deep Freeze Is Fun for Some
Midwest Cold Plagues Ships, but Hockey Dads, Snowmobilers Relish the Thick Ice
By CAROLINE PORTER and BEN KESLING
When the mercury dipped below zero earlier this month, many Iowans huddled inside and hoped it would end soon. Neil Herbold took his four children to a frozen pond to play hockey.
"I absolutely love having more ice," said Mr. Herbold, a 35-year-old mental-health technician from Pierson, Iowa. He organized the group Northwest Iowa Pond Hockey this season to "encourage people to get their kids off the couch when it's cold out," he said.
The Midwest hasn't had this much ice on the Great Lakes and other bodies of water this early in the season for decades, and another blast of cold is expected this week. Wind chills as low as 40 degrees below zero are forecast for the Upper Midwest, according to the National Weather Service.
Ferries this month have shut down early, a ship slammed into a U.S. Coast Guard cutter and ice dams threatened floods around the region. But the ice also was thick enough in many places for skating, climbing and snowmobiling.
"We've had lots of places to choose from," said Mr. Herbold, who has enjoyed foot-thick ice at his local pond for about two months. "It's been an absolute dream compared to last year when we didn't have much at all."
About 60% of the Great Lakes will be under ice cover for the months of January and February, predicts George Leshkevich, a scientist with the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. During the past three decades the average maximum freeze-over has only been about 50% each year. Last year, it was roughly 38%.
It has been 25 years since the lakes have had this much ice this early, said Mark Gill, director of vessel traffic services with the U.S. Coast Guard in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich, which hit minus-16 degrees on Jan. 3. The extra ice means slower speeds, decreased loads and lost money for some 50 ships still navigating the lakes, he said.
Nine Coast Guard cutters and two Canadian ships are breaking up ice, a sometimes harrowing experience, Mr. Gill said. In early January, one cutter suffered minor damage when it got stuck in heavy ice and was struck by the ship it was leading.
For the Beaver Island Boat Co., which runs two ferries between Charlevoix, Mich., and Beaver Island, in Lake Michigan, the extreme ice and cold meant the service had to shut down about a week early for the first time in at least five years, said assistant manager Tim McQueer, costing the company as much as $10,000 in lost business.
"There are a couple of shipments that people have to wait until next season to get now, such as lumber, which you cannot ship by plane," he said.
For the ecosystem, however, heavy ice yields a number of benefits, including preventing water levels from falling further in bodies of water that hit all-time low levels in early 2013, as Lakes Michigan and Huron did. This followed a drought the previous summer and warmer year-round water temperatures that led to substantial evaporation.
"The Great Lakes get water mostly from precipitation and lose water from evaporation," said Andy Buchsbaum, director of the Great Lakes office of the National Wildlife Foundation. "That evaporation happens year round, including in the winter. And if you put a cap on the Great Lakes, virtually no water is evaporating."
When the ice thaws, changes in water temperatures and density will cause the lakes to churn, adding oxygen to the water and helping fish and other animals to flourish, said Mr. Buchsbaum. It could also lead to reduced levels of algae, which has been plaguing the lakes for years.
In Munising, Mich., ice climbers—who make their way up frozen sandstone cliffs sometimes 350-feet high are having an unusually good year. "This is some of the best ice we've had in decades," said Bill Thompson, organizer of the Michigan Ice Festival, scheduled for late January, and co-owner of local sporting-good store Down Wind Sports. "When you have tons of snow and lots of ice, people buy things," Mr. Thompson said. "We love this weather."
Mark Martin, an ice-fishing guide from Twin Lake, Mich., says the thick ice is a boon to his business. Still, he acknowledges some pitfalls. "You really can't go out unprepared," said Mr. Martin, who fishes from a collapsible tent he pulls behind his snowmobile. "Recently, my glasses froze to my face."

Great Lakes Water Levels
January 2nd, 2014 at 7:35 pm by Bill Steffen

Lake Superior is now back to the long-term average…so only Lake Michigan-Huron (which is a single lake for lake-level purposes, as the 2 lakes are connected at the Mac. Bridge and are at the same water level) is now below the long-term average.  Remember, more than one study has shown that the reduced level of Lake Michigan-Huron is mostly or completely due to dredging in the St. Clair River.  According to this article in the Milwaukee Journal “The St. Clair has been heavily dredged for over a century, and the federal government has long acknowledged that this human meddling in the riverbed has led to a permanent drop of about 16 inches from Michigan and Huron’s long-term average.  Alarmed by the fact that even the lakes’ peak levels had been below that average line for several years, a Canadian conservation group created by property owners from northern Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay hired its own engineering firm to conduct a study of what was going on in the St. Clair River back in 2004. That study said the water lost from the lakes by expanding the river channel was actually much greater than 16 inches – and getting worse.”

Here’s the increase in water level for 2013:  Superior 12″, Michigan-Huron 14″, Erie 10″, Ontario 11″ and St. Clair 14″.  Superior is down 2″ in the last month (not surprising…it’s been too cold up north to melt anything and Superior is still mainly open water and there is some evaporation) and Michigan-Huron is down 1″ in the last month.  Lake Ontario is up to 2″ in the last month, Erie is up 4″ in the last month (a lot for Dec.) and Lake St. Clair is up 3″ month-to-month.  Lakes Erie and Ontario are now both 2″ above their century average, Lakes Superior and St. Clair are exactly at average and Lake Michigan-Huron is 14″ below the long-term average.

Also, there’s more ice on the Great Lakes today (1/2) than any 1/2 since 1989.   a pilot’s view of the ice at Grand Haven and Holland…last winter’s pic. of the ice balls on Lake Michigan…and, here’s a link to a blog article containing the map (click on the map) showing the last time the Great Lakes were more than 95% ice covered in 1979.    www.blogs.woodtv.com/2011/02/09/great-lakes-ice/ According to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab at Ann Arbor, Lake Michigan has never completely frozen over.   In the coldest winters, (1903-04, 1976-77 and most recently 1978-79) Lake Michigan was more than 90 percent ice-covered, but in 76-77 and 78-79, pilots said there was always some open water in the middle of the lake.  Lake Erie is most likely to freeze over, despite the fact that it’s the southernmost of the Great Lakes, because it’s the shallowest (max. depth 210 feet, average depth 62 feet — compare that to Torch Lake (NE of Traverse City) has an average depth of 111 feet and a maximum depth of 285 feet) of the Great Lakes.

Singer/Songwriter/Actor, Paul Williams

So where is Paul Williams? I know nobody reads my blogs, but that's who I write for; the most fortunate of nobodies who inadvertantly stumble upon such a privilege.
Paul Hamilton Williams, Jr.(born September 19, 1940 is an American composer, singer-songwriter, director, and actor. He is what the entertainment industry calls a "quadruple threat," because he is at least prificient at five industry professions. But real quickly, here's a shot of how many of us remember him from back in the day: Paul is the guy on the left.
I've been a Paul Williams fan since childhood, but haven't seen hide nor tail of the legend in many years, and just yesterday I finally researched him after a few months of making a mental note to do so.
My earliest memories of Williams is from his songs I heard on the radio as a child. Then I remember him on various talk shows and variety shows. Then, before I was even a teen, I was shocked and intrigued when I saw the movie, "Phantom of the Paradise," in which he performed the music for the musical based on The Phantom of the Opera. Wow! I saw the movie and watched intently only for his scenes three times on tv by the time I was 14.
So without any further babbling, here is an awesome article/interview and links I found that are very encouraging and informative, because I found he is a great voice for recovering addictions, which I am a fan of, and he is actively involved still, in musical arts. And I feel blessed to have had a curiosity that is not mere coincidence. But it is timely, that if not for a simple reminder to pray for someone for some reason I have no idea why, I get a chance to experience the thrill of learning about someone who I've admired since childhood. And I'll be 50 on March 11 and I'm still intrigued by people's meaningful life's exploits. Enjoy.

Paul Williams is a 'Loved One' – overcoming substance abuse to hit the high notes

TOM DWORETZKY/ NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Williams talks about gratitude and recovery at the Cafe Carlyle.

Paul Williams says he has lived a blessed life and is grateful.
Not so much because of his many successes as an actor, singer and songwriter – but because he has been given a second chance.
You wouldn't know his troubles from screaming headlines, though. Williams was lucky to have never became tabloid fodder.
"The fact is I did rehab twice and was never 'outed' by the press," he says.
"By the time I got sober I was hardly the high profile performer I'd been," he continues. He had somehow managed to keep it under wraps, at least in public at the height of fame. "I did 'The Tonight Show' with Johnny Carson forty-eight times. I remember six!" he confesses.
"When my addiction to alcohol and cocaine outran my need to be in front of an audience I hid out. And drank.  You know you're an alcoholic when you misplace a decade and I did."
He managed to pull out of the nosedive that claimed so many talents back in the 80s.
"I've been sober for twenty-three of the most amazing years of my life," he reveals. "And now, rather than being outed by the press, I'm happy and honored to speak at a public level about the gifts of recovery.  It's a life blessing and I speak all over the world about addiction and the way out of that nightmare."
These days there are two things Williams is deeply passionate about, he stresses. "Recovery, for sure, and secondly, music creators' rights."
Four years ago Williams was elected president and chairman of the board of The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, or ASCAP.  "It's my honor to represent over 460,000 music creators and rights holders in their efforts to be fairly compensated for the music the world is listening to," he says.
Another high point, in a life filled with highs, both the good and bad kinds, is his recent show at the cafe.

"Love Boat"? Oh yeah, Williams wrote that, too.

"I'll be at the Carlyle for two weeks performing on a stage baptized by the amazing Bobby Short.  Now, do I have reason to be grateful or do I have reason to be grateful!" he says.
This reporter is grateful that he got a chance to catch up with Williams and pose a few questions to the legendary funnyman. After all, no one gets on Carson that many times without being able to crack up the late, great host:
News: Your first movie role showed your clear attraction to space exploration. Is this why you abandoned the arts in favor of a career in rocket science like your brother John? Is that why he became a rocket scientist? Actually, if you are interested in space, or science, feel free to comment.
Williams: The fact I played a boy genius who loved rockets was just a happy accident.  My older brother Jack was an engineer that contributed to the space program.  While the 60's were spent metaphorically in outer space by many of us ..   we went to San Francisco wearing flowers in our hair and a variety of substances altering our consciousness ...   my love affair was with movies.   I started out as an actor and when that career failed that other door you  hear about opened and led to a life making music that I'm eternally grateful for.

News: Seriously though, did working with the late great Jonathan Winters influence you personally or professionally, and if so how? Did he teach or did you learn anything specific from him. And do you have a story about the two of you that you would be willing to share?
Williams: One of the great perks to working in the entertainment business is getting to know your heroes.  I was and am a huge fan of Jonathan's brilliant mind.  On the set of The Loved One I followed him around like a puppy.   Years later when he found out I was the Paul Williams who wrote songs that he'd been hearing about he was delighted.  We remained friends thru the years and in fact had the same business manager.  Talk about a man with real patience.  Can you imagine having Jonathan and I as clients you're trying to teach to act and invest like responsible adults?
News: You have had an active career in acting as well as music. Do you prefer one over the other? Do they engage different parts of you?
Williams: They say 'dance with the one that brought you to the party'!  For me that's music.  I have a great love of film and once I had any reputation that would allow me to realistically seek specific work in the industry I gravitated to film.  Beginning with Cinderella Liberty I was happy to write songs for movies that other people acted in.  John Williams and I were nominated for best song that year although the Oscar went home with someone else.   I've always loved writing for film but walking onto a set as an actor feels like the midwest dream come true.  Lights, camera, action and ME?  wow.
News: How is it different, if it is, for you creatively when you approach a role vs a song? Do you apply acting technique either in performance or the writing of music?
Williams: Yes, there are similarities in the way I approach writing a song.  Especially if I'm writing for a character in a film that's a songwriter.  Kris Kristopherson's John Norman Howard in "A Star Is Born" or Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty's Chuck and Lyle in Ishtar.  Believe it or not that was a favorite writing assignment.  I approached it like a method actor and went so far as to experience things their character experienced.  I spent two nights alone in the Moroccan desert to write songs they were writing when lost there ..    Of course, in those days, the mid eighties, I was pretty crazy.
News: Tell us about working with Mort Sahl the legendary comic and social critic at the height of his powers in the 1960s.
Williams: It's a bit of a stretch to say that I wrote for Mort Sahl.  I wrote and acted in improvisational sketches on the Mort Saul show.  The man was and is brilliant.  He was one of the first people to write a check for acting or writing with my name on it.

TOM DWORETZKY/ NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Paul Williams at the Cafe Carlyle says he is a lucky guy.

News: You are thought of as a child star...?
Williams: Well, in truth I wasn't a child star.  In my early twenties I played kids in the movies.  A couple of them anyway.  The Chase with Marlon Brando for example.  I was playing a 16 year old teenager when I was in my mid twenties.  I started writing songs at twenty seven and my world changed.
News: What would you like to say to a new generation about your long-lived career, your success as a sex symbol and what you've seen change  in the culture of celebrity and stardom over the last half-century from your vantage point as a star? Certainly things seem a bit more manufactured these days...although that might be just the romance of nostalgia... But it seems these days that first you do the sex tape and then you cash in with your own fragrance...
Williams: Sex symbol. Give me a moment to get over the giggles.  The message I'd deliver is 'live your life with a sense of your own greatness.  I'd quote the song Kenny Ascher and I wrote for the end of "The Muppet Movie" .  an additional verse to "The Rainbow Connection".
"Life's like a movie, write your own ending.  Keep believing, keep pretending.  We've done just what we set out to do. Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers and You!"
In other words, you're thinking can deeply effect your future.  Self worth is huge.  Authenticity is mandatory for success.  If you're a songwriter ... we don't need another David Bowie, or Bruno Mars or ..   name your favorite.  We need you.  Your stories.  Your brilliance.  I live my life in Gratitude and Trust.  Grateful for what I've had and Trusting that I'll have what I need in the future.
There's room for kindness in this world.  Edge is entertaining. Yes.  And I don't mean to get all Jimminy Cricket but, we can use gentle wisdom and actions.  Be sweet.  It pays of big time.
News: What are you working on these days? I know you have  have just signed a deal with Penguin with your friend Tracey Jackson to write a book called "Gratitude and Trust: Recovery Is Not Just For Addicts.". What else? Albums, movies, etc. can we expect from you in the future?
Williams:  "[The Book] is my first venture as an author and I'm excited to share our thoughts about how the recovery process that has saved my life might very well be a strong addition to the lifestyle of people with life limiting, as opposed to life threatening, habits," he explains.
We have a website, www.GratitudeAndTrust.com and that's "a new adventure as well. We both blog regularly and are building a following on Twitter.  And @IMPaulWilliams is bringing out the short short story writer in me.  It's a wonderful way to stay connected to our audience, friends and future readers.http://www.GratitudeAndTrust.com
Gustavo Santaolalla and I are writing songs for an animated film called 'The Book of Life' for Fox. We're also providing the songs for a new stage musical based on Guillermo Del Toro's brilliant "Pan's Labyrinth."  Also, there are two songs on the new Daft Punk Album with my lyrics.  One of which I sing.
